Happy New Year!

Who else was in bed by 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve? This girl sure was. Ain’t got time for that! 😉 Our dogs sure made it certain we were up from midnight to 3 a.m. as they panicked over all the noise outside. It was rainy and windy here too. I’m totally an old curmudgeon because the weather alone would have discouraged me from setting off any fireworks.

new-years-dayDon’t worry though! Jude made sure to have me up early New Year’s Day even though I had wanted to sleep in a bit.

So, blog goals for 2017:
*Figure out how to easily cross post my photos from Instagram to WordPress. Mine always seem to glitch.
*Get this blog up and running again — more expansive Instagram posts are my plans. For example: Pinterest Projects and the HOW not just the end result.
*More parenting posts as well. The thing with these is I need to be in the mood to write and that’s not always something I’m up to. Brain fog with Crohn’s Disease is a thing I can’t always write around.

I hope this new theme works out too. I felt it was a good fit with my “Scrapbooking” of odds and ends here. I hope you’re all having a great start to your New Year and if you’re not, remember you can ALWAYS start fresh again whenever you want. A calendar doesn’t determine that for you.

Much Love,
Katie

The Winds of Change

Ch-ch-changes. Yes, life has gotten away from me a bit and it’s brought on some more changes. It’s about time my blog catches up with it. If you’ve been here awhile, you likely remember this blog as “Ye Olde Humdrum” but I’ve slowly been switching all my social media over to “Katies Book Niche” since signing with Usborne Books & More. (Don’t worry! I’m NOT a pushy salesy person. Following/continuing to follow this blog will not result in endless ads!)

I’ve been super busy over at Instagram — in fact it’s probably my main form of public social media anymore. My Pinterest is hit and miss…and another thing I need to update. Lol. I’m hoping this blog kind of ties everything together with DIY, books, parenting, pets and life in general. A few of my catagories may disappear over in the right column as well. They just don’t fit the new life I’ve carved out over the past 18 months or so. 🙂

I hope all is well with you and your family as we head into the holiday season. Things have been good here.

5 Years!

5 year

Dang!! Five years? Thanks for sticking around everyone!! I’m stuck at home waiting for FedEx to bring my replacement phone (I dropped “ol’ trusty” and ended up hitting a corner on our ancient stove which broke the screen), so I have plenty of time to do laundry and blog before “delivery by end of day.” Great day of opportunity to catch up!

2014 in review

Hi, folks!

I’m still around, just life has been a little crazy. I have lots of stuff coming up for this blog: the return of Quotes of the Week, 2014 family day trips, book reviews, and the return of gaming. I’ve been gaming quite a bit since I received the Sims 4 from my awesome inlaws for Christmas! In the meantime, here’s my 2014 year end report.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 640 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 11 trips to carry that many people.

Insurgent

Trying to pick up my good reading habit again! I guess I hadn’t updated Ye Olde Bookshelf in over a year. Whoops!!!

Ye Olde Bookshelf

InsurgentI breezed through Divergent (which I apparently forgot to write a review for) this summer while we were in Maine and since I knew I’d have an extra day of quiet after medical procedures, I decided I’d try and pick up another book in this series and get through it. Lol. Well, that extra day didn’t happen, but I did finally manage to get through this book last week!

Insurgent really started out slow and I was having an issue keeping up the reading pace. It starts where Divergent left off and I feel that I should have read Insurgent after I finished Divergent and kept up the momentum! The ending was jaw dropping — I honestly didn’t see it coming — and I didn’t see the deaths of any characters coming this time either. Veronica Roth did a great job of keeping you on your toes when the…

Saving That Money!!

StatersI may be on a bit of a couponing high from this morning, but I’m thinking I did pretty well! This was the highest savings I’ve ever netted on paper and digital coupons ever at Stater Bros. I’ve had higher savings just by shopping sales and using those BOGO and “Combine and Save” deals, but I did pretty awesome this morning! I’m not an extreme couponer either, or the net paid out would be much less, but I don’t buy what we don’t use. Part of saving money to me is using what we buy and I don’t have a warehouse to store all those deals either, so for me it just wouldn’t work to buy 20 X 36 roll packages of toilet paper!! Haha.

As a SAHM, we’re really a one income household. My money from Pink Zebra isn’t as steady as I’d like (yet), so that ends up being (a) play money or (b) saving money. Due to this, I try and save wherever I can. This can be through sales, couponing or a myriad of apps on my phone. Now, I only have so much time during the day so I’ve limited myself to apps that are easy to learn and use, or I could go crazy with all these apps on my phone.

Unlike other apps, Checkout 51 can be used at any store. If you frequent local chains (like I do), this app will be more useful for you. It’s only drawback is that you can only use each coupon once a week. Personally, I also feel like you have to be a bit more “on top of it” to redeem your receipts. This is an app that I redeem offers on the minute I sit down when I get home or it feels like I miss out.

Ibotta is actually quite a bit of fun! I use this with Cartwheel at Target quite a bit, but it’s also the only way I’ve found that I can cash in at Costco. In addition to your own savings, you can build onto those savings and earn bonuses with your “team.” Your team is composed of your friends on Facebook and there’s different levels of bonuses you can earn each month.

I love Target and boy do I love Cartwheel. If you remember to check Target’s coupon section on their website and print out coupons before you leave your home, you can really stack up the savings in addition to your Red Card (I have the debit, so NO credit card debt here). I’ve netted almost $60 in savings since I started using this app last year and right now, there’s tons of deals on toys! I saved 20% on my son’s birthday gift coming up and I’m planning on buying quite a few Christmas gifts in the same manner. This app also allows you to scan your items in store and it will look up if there’s an offer on it or not. It’s so convenient!!

Hopefully that gives my fellow savers something to start at. I’m not the biggest saver, but I do make a dent in our grocery shopping trips by using these 3 apps. 🙂

Where have we been?

Here, there and everywhere is the short answer. Seems like every time I come back to WordPress, they’ve changed the publisher interface. Yikes!! A little peep into what we’ve been up to:
wpid-20140603_235952.jpgIf you guessed that’s an airplane window, you’d be right! I’ll upload some more photos tonight so they’re ready for me to insert into posts later. As for now…we’re going to the beach tomorrow! Good night. ❤
